#10 David Beckham Halfway Line Goal
On the 17th of August, David Beckham shot himself into another level of fame after his ambitious attempt on goal from the halfway line flew over Neil Sullivan and into Wimbledon’s net. I think had he missed, he’d have been on the end of the famous “hair dryer” treatment from boss, Sir Alex Ferguson – what a moment in the Premier League’s great history.
#9 Delia Smith Takes to the Stage
Delia Smith’s ‘let’s be ‘avin you’ speech makes it in at number 9. After 45 minutes, Smith decided to try and rally the fans, as The Canaries attempted to salvage something from home tie against Manchester City to help with their failing attempt at Premier League survival. Although chef Smith denies allegations in the media that she was drunk while giving her half-time speech, I can imagine 99% of people were not convinced. This was not one of the famous chef’s finest career moves and I’m sure she’d agree.
#8 Chelsea’s 1st Premier League Tit
Arrogant but talented current and former Chelsea boss, José Mourinho, proved to the world that he really was ‘The Special One’ as he delivered Chelsea’s first ever Premier League title during his first season with a record 95 points. The Portuguese 2-time Champions League winner also managed to win the League Cup in the same season.
#7 Newcastle United 4 – 4 Arsenal
On the 5th of February 2011, title challengers, Arsenal, were stunned by Newcastle as they came back to draw following a 4 goal deficit. As Arsenal led 3-0 after just 10 minutes, the game looked well out of reach for the Magpies but with a sending off for Abou Diaby, two penalties for Joey Barton, a goal from Leon Best and a 20-yard last-minute scorcher from Cheik Tioté, they managed to pull it back to 4-4 – ‘unbelievable Jeff!’
#6 Tottenham Hotspur 3 – 5 Manchest
I’m sure everyone would love to have witnessed Sir Alex Ferguson’s team talk on Saturday 29th September 2001, as United staged one of the greatest comebacks in Premier League history. Goals from David Beckham, Andy Cole, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Laurent Blanc and Juan Sebastian Veron ensured Man United’s remarkable 5-3 win, despite being 3-0 down at half-time.
#5 Bradford City Stay Up
History was certainly made Premiership history on the final day of the 1999-2000 season, as they staged an upset at home to Liverpool thanks to a David Wetherall goal. This game also prevented Liverpool from qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, which they would have done had they won the game.
#4 Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ Season
26 wins, 12 draws, 0 losses in the 38 Premier League games played by Arsenal in the 2003-2004 season defines an exceptional feat for Arsenal football club, as they went a whole league season unbeaten. Names such as Henry, Pires, Viera, Bergkamp and Ljungberg were at the crux of Arsene Wenger’s most successful season, as they regained the Premier League title.
#3 West Bromwich Albion’s Great Esc
Bottom of the table and 8 points away from safety at Christmas, things were not looking bright from a struggling West Brom side in the Premier League. However, a turn of form and an enthralling finale to the campaign, which saw them defeat Portsmouth 2-0, enabled the Baggies to pull off one of the biggest turnaround’s in Premier League history (and one of the biggest post-match pitch invasions…).
#2 Blackburn Rovers Win The League
Thanks to apparently limitless funds provided by Jack Walker, Blackburn Rovers were able to win their first major trophy since 1928. Although Rovers were top for the majority of the season, Premier League giants Manchester United hotly contested them throughout the season and, had they scored a winner against West Ham on the final day of the season, would have won it. A deadly strike force of Chris Sutton and Alan Shearer played a huge role in winning the most prestigious trophy in English football.
#1 Balotelli… Agueroooooooooooooooo
Spine-tingling stuff… On the most dramatic, eventful, incredible and heartbreaking day in English football, Manchester City won their first Premier League title with virtually the last kick of the game as Sergio Aguero managed to keep a cool head to bring the Citizens back from 2-1 down against QPR in a match, which saw Joey Barton’s nastier side broadcast to English television views. As Man United had won their game at Sunderland, all eyes were on the game at the Etihad, as Man City looked set to throw away their spot at the top of the table, before two late goals from Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero – crazy scenes.
