#5 He Will Earn Approximately £300,
Wayne Rooney’s current contract sees him already on a staggering £250,000 per week. After handing in a transfer request in 2010, Man United made him the world’s highest paid player at the time when giving him a new contract to keep him at the club. With the club in danger of missing out on Champions League football they are showing their intent on keeping him at the club, with a new deal worth a massive £300,000 per week. A £50,000 increase may not seem huge in terms of a famous footballer’s earnings, but stepping into the £300,000+ per week amount is something we have not seen before.
#4 The Contract Will Run Until 2018
Wayne Rooney’s current deal at Man United only runs until the end of the 2014/15 campaign, and the club are aware of how a player’s value can spiral downwards once the final year of their contract is entered. With David Moyes’ men currently enduring a difficult season so far, ensuring that one of their star players remains at the club, or at least retains his value, is a wise move. The Man United squad may need overhauling, but Wayne Rooney is not a player they would want to risk losing this summer. With the contracts of Vidic, Ferdinand and Evra all expiring in June, David Moyes would want to keep the key parts of his squad intact.
#3 He Will Be Made Club Captain As
It is believed that Man United are to reward Wayne Rooney for committing his future to the club by making him the new club captain. With Nemanja Vidic announcing that he will be leaving Old Trafford upon expiry of his contract in June, the club would have looked for a player to take over the armband. Rooney would undoubtedly be honored to be named the team’s new captain, but eyebrows may be raised by Man United fans after his previous attempts at engineering a move away from the club. Nevertheless, he has always been a leader on the pitch for Man United, and would be a suitable candidate to replace the ever-present Vidic.
#2 He Will Be The Highest Paid Play
Wayne Rooney’s new deal will see him become the highest paid player in Premier League history. With mega-rich Man City and Chelsea to contend with financially, that is quite a feat. Robin Van Persie and Yaya Toure are believed to earn similarly to Rooney’s £250,000 a week contract, and Sergio Aguero, Fernando Torres, and Eden Hazard are the other big earners in the Premier League. Questions will be raised over whether Rooney is worth such a financial outlay, but it certainly demonstrates Man United’s strong desire to keep him at Old Trafford. Man United is one of the most profitable sporting institutions in the world, so they are able to pay such extravagant amounts to their star players.
#1 He Will Earn Around £70m Through
The duration of Wayne Rooney’s deal means that he will earn approximately £70m over the duration of his contract. It is a huge financial commitment by Man United, and Rooney will be 33 by the time the deal finishes. Man United are a huge global brand, but a potential lack of Champions League football would mean less revenue to fund huge deal such as this. One could argue that the club could use these funds to invest in a new forward, but he is a key player at Old Trafford and they are intent on keeping hold of him. If he expressed a desire to leave Man United once again in the future, the club are in a strong position to get good money for him because of the new deal.
